From Ros, our secretary

I have three delightful boys, Matthew aged 14, Liam aged 10 and Daniel who is nearly two. Both Matthew and Liam are dyslexic and have Central Auditory problems. Matthew also has dyspraxia.

I met Dawn in July 2010 and boy what a difference she has made to all our lives. I knew Matthew had significant development delays at a early age and when he was in primary school I could see he was struggling. Reading for both my boys is a chore and not an enjoyable experience.

Matthew started high school last year. I had really begun to lose all hope and high school was proving too difficult for him. Watching Matthew sink into oblivion was soul destroying but, I couldn't find the strength to do anything but, then we met Dawn. Dawn assessed Matthew and confirmed my suspicions. We started with some one on one tutoring which took place during school hours. Eventually due to the lack of support and poor exam results, I decided to withdraw him from school and begin homeschooling.

It's been the best decision I ever made and would certainly recommend it to anyone considering it. I have been wanting to home school for years but, never had the courage to do so. My family is very supportive and the committee members of the centre are all behind me too. That makes the world of difference and Dawn is keeping a close eye on us. Matthew is a lot happier now as a result of his healthy eating habits and fitness regime, he has also lost weight.

The support behind homeschooling is fantastic and there are three brilliant web sites that you can connect too and find out where you can meet up with others. You can chat on line with other families and get some sound advice or find someone who will gladly let you have a good old whinge when times get tough which believe me they do but, help is always at hand. You are never alone and it's good to know this. The sites are very informative and if you want to start your own group then they are only too happy to help. They can provide insurance for older children wanting to carry out voluntary work and for groups wanting to hire out halls where they can meet up and do various activities.

For more information go to the web site www.hbln.org.au. They charge $45 if you wish to be a member and that entitles you to discounts on group outings and certain retail stores. There are two other web sites called Perth homeschooling and PHEN networking, both free to join.

If you are unhappy with the education your child is receiving and you are considering home schooling then my strong advice would be go for it you've nothing to lose only a hell of a lot to gain. It's challenging and daunting at times but, very rewarding and you are in control.

As I said earlier help is out there.
